Calculating Requirements – Refrigerant Dehumidifiers

It goes without saying that Force 3 will be with you wherever you need us, whenever you need us.

Calculating the correct number of refrigerant dehumidifiers for your water loss -

A technically competent person can determine the best drying options with regard to load, performance of drying equipment and the ongoing monitoring of the drying envelope by using a psychometric chart. The use of a thermal hygrometer will give readings of temperature in Celsius and Relative Humidity which allow the calculation of the Specific Humidity and then the total moisture load can be calculated using the equation below.

By knowing the total cubic capacity of the area to be dried, the moisture load by weight is calculated by:

Specific Humidity (kg/kg) x Total cubic capacity = total moisture load (kg) 0.833

The total moisture load can be divided by 24 to indicate the total airborne moisture available to be removed within an hour. Divide this by the collection rate of each different class of refrigerant dehumidifier and you will be able to assess how many dehumidifiers you need of each class to do the job.

  1. The Length, Width and Height of the area to be dried. 
  2. The Temperature of the air in the area to be dried (Celsius or Fahrenheit) 
  3. The Relative Humidity of the air to be dried (use a thermal hygrometer).

Calculating Requirements for Water Damage Restoration -
Normally two to five air changes per hour (ACH) are recommended for water damage restoration applications. 

  1. Calculate the volume of the structure in cu. ft. (L x W x H). 
  2. Calculate the SCFM for one air change (volume / 60). 
  3. Calculate the dehumidification capacity required (SCFM x ACH).

Example: A multi-story building measuring 100'L x 50'W x 50'H has received water damage due to flooding. You need to provide dehumidification capacity for three air changes per hour (ACH). 

  1. Volume = 100 x 50 x 50 = 250,000 cu. ft. 
  2. SCFM = 250,000 / 60 = 4,167 SCFM 
  3. Dehumidification capacity = 4,167 SCFM x 3 ACH = 12,501 SCFM

This capacity could be provided using three 5,000-CFM dehumidifiers or one 15,000-CFM dehumidifier Use this same formula to calculate the capacity needed for other dehumidification applications in buildings by changing the ACH value.

Desiccant dehumidifiers such as the Corroventa CTR 300XT solve difficult or stubborn restoration problems including drying of structural materials, such as concrete floors, plastered walls, cavities and even document drying such as books. They are also ideal for industrial drying applications such as surface preparation prior to applying. They feature a desiccant honeycomb rotor coated with a rare silica gel to capture water vapour from damp air. Warm, dry air is vented to the area being restored and moisture laden air is vented outside using 4" diameter duct.

The main advantages over refrigerant dehumidifiers is that desiccants produce desert dry air as low as 1% RH and they can also operate in extreme cold, as low as zero degrees - great if no heat is available on site.

Customer Advice - Air Movers Explained

Air movers are an important component of drying, especially in water damage restoration, because they increase the evaporation rate of a material by lifting moisture from the surface up into the air where the moisture can be collected and removed. Restoration Express offers several types including turbo dryers, ductible axial fans and high-volume axial fans. Each type can be combined with dehumidifiers and other equipment to create a complete drying system.

Turbo dryers

Also known as carpet dryers, turbo fans and snout or snail type air movers provide continuous, high velocity airflow for fast, efficient drying of carpets, floors and other surfaces that have been water damaged. They are also useful for carpet cleaning and drying freshly plastered or painted surfaces. Turbo dryers such as the Sahara Pro by Dri Eaz, feature a rugged housing constructed of high-density polyethylene and a stackable design for easy storage.

Axial fans

Deliver high volumes of air through a large opening to boost drying power in remediation applications involving water damage. They are used to remove moisture-laden air from the area being restored to increase the rate of evaporation, boosting the effectiveness of dehumidifiers. The variety of sizes means you can choose the right size fan for the application in hand, either domestic or commercial. Vortex Axial Fans

Deliver massive airflow to positive air pressure to blow fresh air into an area or negative air pressure to pull out moist or contaminated air. Combined with flexible ducting, these versatile ventilators are also ideal for drying and ventilating inaccessible areas such as floor voids, attics, lift-shafts and other service areas. They utilise 12" diameter collapsible ducting to move high volumes of air up to 125 feet away.

Portable Air Scrubbers carry air filtration to an even higher level than negative air machines by utilising 3-stage Filtration. This includes two particulate Filters, a carbon adsorption Filter and a HEPA filter making them ideal for mould abatement applications. They also utilise more powerful blowers that can pull high volumes of air through dirty Filters to maintain sufficient airflow and negative pressure. Air scrubbers are also more portable than negative air machines and are designed so one person can transport them. Some models also include built-in stair climber and dollies to enhance portability in addition, portable air scrubber can be operated using three different methods: recirculation, negative pressure, and air cleaning in remote areas, making them extremely versatile machines for a wide range of applications.

Q) How does a Portable Air Scrubber clean the air?

A) Portable air scrubber utilise four stages of progressively efficient filters to remove particulate and gaseous contaminants and odours from the air:

Stages 1 & 2: Particulate Pre-filters

Two particulate pre-filters remove visible particles and protect the carbon and HEPA filters from premature loading. The first stage is a 1" deep disposable filter for capturing larger particles. The second stage is a 2" deep pleated filter that captures most remaining visible (10+ micron) particles.

Stage 3: Carbon Adsorption

The third stage is an activated carbon filter that removes odours and captures gases and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from smoke, moulds, coatings, paints and adhesives by absorption.

Stage 4: HEPA Filtration

The final stage is a HEPA filter with a minimum particulate efficiency of 99.97% at 0.3 microns. These filters are designed to capture microscopic particulates and bio aerosols (including metal fumes, asbestos fibres, lead dust, smoke particles, bacteria, and mould and fungal spores) that pass right through other filters. This level of filtration often eliminates the need for final cleaning and dust removal after construction and renovation jobs.

Q) How are Portable Air Scrubber utilised?

A) Portable air scrubber can be utilised using three different methods of operation: recirculation, negative pressure, and remote location cleaning.


Portable air scrubber can be utilised to continuously filter and re-circulate air within a local area to provide general air cleaning. Recirculation is used to capture airborne contaminants generated by manufacturing processes and during disaster restoration, construction, and renovation projects in unoccupied buildings. This method is also effective for protecting parts or products from contaminants that settle out of the air and for reducing exposure to unpleasant odours from paintings and coatings.
