Faulkner & Foy win in dramatic finale to Network Q WRGB National Rally

Nov 18, 2015

2015 Winners - Faulkner & Foy!The dramatic finish came as last year's winners Mike Faulkner and Pete Foy benefitted from late misfortune for long-time leaders Jock Armstrong and Paula Swinscoe - who retired on the final stage, Brenig - to steal an unexpected second consecutive victory.

Faulkner overcame some car issues on the opening day and drove superbly through the demanding Welsh forests. Although the early damage was done and the deficit to reigning Scottish Rally Champion Armstrong too great to overcome - until the latter's Brenig heartache - Faulkner thoroughly deserved his success after a strong weekend.

The first day saw the drivers embark on a trio of stages: Hafren; Sweet Lamb and Myherin. Armstrong pushed on in his TEG Sport Subaru Impreza, making the most of his experience - and problems for his competitors. Faulkner was really suffering in the tricky Welsh forests thanks to a toe issue - that's toe-in and toe-out on the wheels, not his feet!

The Lancer E9 driver was grappling with understeer and therefore lost a lot of time. By the end of the day, Armstrong had a lead of 43.2 seconds over Faulkner and Welsh Champion Bob Ceen. Thanks to the Road to Wales initiative, the National champions were all out in force on this event.

Peter Foy - "Just a quick note to thank you for your support in preparation for Wales Rally GB, as usual Supply U.K. came up trumps with great equipment, fantastic service and a smile. The weather was atrocious, the kit worked great and the Supply U.K. team were winners… winning the NetworkQ Wales Rally GB for a second consecutive year…

2014rallygb2Day two saw a bit of a change in pace at the front of the field. Swede Martin Berglund topped all but one of the stages, but he wasn't in the lead battle having retired during the opening leg. With his handling issues resolved, Faulkner was back on the pace and pulling back time on Armstrong - not least because of the Scot's own issues on the storm-lashed stages.

After the cars returned from Aberhirnant, Armstrong's lead over the hard-charging Faulkner was down to 30 seconds, with David Howells and Robin Hernaman third in their Impreza.

Sunday began with Armstrong holding onto his firm lead through the tough Alwen stage - as Faulkner picked up a puncture - and then the short blast around the legendary Great Orme.

However, as the cars went through the final Brenig timed section, Armstrong's TEG Subaru Impreza ground to a halt with a broken ball joint just five corners from the finish and victory. Much like his only other appearance at Rally GB back in 1996, he endured challenging conditions and his bid ended in retirement.

2014rallygb1Winner Faulkner said: "Another fantastic WRGB National Rally! The atmosphere around the whole event was electric despite the weather and certainly captured the spirit of the classic Network Q days. Notwithstanding the appalling conditions, the event stayed on-track and all the marshals stuck out in the weather for long days remained full of enthusiasm and always had a smile.

"They were probably the worst conditions in which we have ever competed. Just staying on the road was a task in itself - aquaplaning down the track certainly kept us alert - but that only added to the challenge and made it as much a battle against the elements as the competition, which is how all the classic Network Q RAC events used to be.

"We were delighted to emerge as the winners for the second year in a row. We are a small family team, so this is a massive achievement and testimony to the commitment of everybody involved. Great support and fantastic marshalling - a truly classic Wales Rally GB!"
